Some would say Missy Elliott is back, since her last album release was nearly 15 years ago with 2005’s The Cookbook. But we know an icon never leaves and we’re all still bumping “Work It” and “Get Ur Freak On” years later.
Last night, Missy threw it back—quite literally—with Iconology a 5-track EP release. Featuring tracks like club bangers “Throw It Back”, “Cool Off” and a sensual “DripDemeanor” featuring Sum1 that Missy herself says “…#ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance”. The entire EP, co-produced with Timberland and Wili Hendrix, pays homage to the sort of musical arrangements that earned Missy Elliott her visionary icon status and reconnects with long-time fans. Even with reminiscent arrangements (not to be confused with dated because Missy was before her time!), the collection strikes the perfect balance between Missy’s futuristic hip-hop styles and contemporary tempos and contains a host of zingers sure to be hashtags, tweets, and exit texts to your ex.
New music from Missy is always good but this release is made sweeter by its timing. The 5-time Grammy winner will be honored with the MTV VMAs Video Vanguard Award on Monday, August 26 and became the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame earlier this year. While this is Missy’s first collection of tracks released since 2015, she’s teamed up artists throughout the years including Ariana Grande, Kelly Rowland, Ciara and most recently Lizzo on her new single “Tempo.”
