The dust has yet to settle from DuVernay’s latest movie release and she’s already working on the next big thing.
Ava DuVernay is one of Hollywood’s current “it” girls and it’s no wonder when everything she touches turns to gold. The award-winning director who turned down the chance to direct the epic juggernaut that is Marvel’s Black Panther is being tapped by Warner Bros. to direct their upcoming New Gods movie which features a new universe of superheroes based on DC’s 1971 comic series of the same name by creator Jack Kirby.
DC Comics’ New Gods, also known as the “Fourth World”, is about a pantheon of Gods who come into existence after the old Gods of classical mythology are destroyed during Ragnarok. They live in a world disconnected from the normal realm of time and space on twin planets that are completely different from each other: New Genesis, a lush paradise ruled by the Highfather and Apokolips a dark hellish world full of fire pits ruled by Darkseid.
New Gods will be the second DC film helmed by a woman and the first superhero action movie for DuVernay who made history as the first Black woman in Hollywood to direct a $100 million budget film with Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time. The film, which was released last week, has grossed $42.2 million in its first six days according to Variety.
We’re super curious to see the development of this new universe on the big screen from DuVernay and DC.
