Jennifer Hudson Will Play Aretha Franklin in Upcoming Biopic

Highlighting the journey of Black women as they create spaces…

Talk about blessings
Oscar and Grammy winning actress Jennifer Hudson was handpicked by the Aretha Franklin to star in the upcoming biopic on the Queen of Soul’s life. This isn’t the first time reports of Hudson playing Franklin in a biopic were announced but this news came from Clive Davis last night at his annual pre-Grammy Awards party.
via Deadline:
Davis tonight introduced Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson to sing a couple songs, and then told the audience that Hudson will be playing Aretha Franklin in an upcoming biopic about the life of the Queen of Soul. Hudson was in fact hand picked by Franklin to play the role. It was appropriate that Davis introduce all this, since he has such a long professional relationship with Franklin. The party began with performances by Barry Manilow, Luis Fonsi, Ben Platt, Alicia Keys, Khalid and Logic. Hudson was the last singer to perform. Hudson sang Franklin classics Think, and Respect as part of her performance.
The project is reportedly being financed by MGM and produced by Straight Outta Compton’s Scott Bernstein and music producer Harvey Mason Jr. whose produced music for both Franklin and Hudson including Dreamgirls where Hudson won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Sounds like she might be getting one for Lead Actress this time.
