Saturday night, HBO premiered Beyonce’s highly anticipated concept video, Lemonade. The hour long visual album which touched heavily on infidelity also provided cameo appearances by some up and coming #BlackGirlMagic celebrities.
While Serena Williams stole the show twerking alongside a reclined Beyonce in “Sorry”–The final chapter in the video, Redemption, brought us actress Amandla Stenberg, Zendaya, and sister duos ChloexHalle, and twins Ibeyi.
While most are familiar names and faces, the twin duo, Lisa-Kainde and Naomi Diaz of Ibeyi, are not well known in the US. The 20 year old French-Cuban twins, daughters of famed Cuban percussionist Anga Diaz, gained attention last year with the release of their video “River”. Highly regarded for its minimalist appearance the video gained more than 3 million views on its release and the attention of Beyonce who sampled the track last year on Instagram while promoting her Vogue cover shoot.
Ibeyi sings in both English and Yoruba mixing bits of their heritage with jazz, deep soul and Afro-Cuban tradition. Their self titled album is a series of reflections on love, loss, and family that pays homage to their religion with haunting chants throughout, invoking orishas, such as Oshun– who Beyonce channels during her visual album. It’s no wonder the twins were tapped to be apart of her latest work.
